As we learn to trade in the markets we learn many other side skills along the way that we may not even realize. You learn how to control stress and anxiety, you learn how to build a daily schedule, you learn how to get control of your thoughts and set intentions for your life. Perhaps you don't see these things happening, but trading requires us to learn all of these things in order to become better, more rounded traders. But what do you do if you find out you aren't learning these things? That instead of learning how your mind works you instead fall victim to your fears and bad habits? What do you do if you see your coping mechanisms are unhealthy and stress inducing instead of calming? Well you acknowledge the problem and start looking for the solution! This month we are going to dedicate an article a week to common issues in the trading world and how to remedy them in healthy ways to make you grow as a person.

As with most health and wellness concerns, we often do not fail in every aspect, but rarely do we succeed in every aspect either, at least not at first. Let's take a quick tour of the different facets of health and wellness we will be focusing on this month so you can identify your own weaknesses and jump straight to the article in question. We are going to focus on five different issues we have seen pop up for traders. Coping mechanisms, anxiety, stress, intention setting and being present. Now though these issues may seem to be simple at first, they can reveal themselves in a myriad of ways. For example, our first topic is that of coping mechanisms. Coping mechanisms can be anything from a nervous tick or a small daily habit of no consequence to over indulging in smoking or drinking or over eating which can cause a host of health consequences.

Because there can be so many ways in which some of these concerns will reveal themselves in your life, we will be focusing more on defining and identifying these aspects in your life over offering straight up solutions. Your negative habits and your stressors will be unique to you so it is impossible to make a short article targeting an individual problem. But we will help you identify where your stressors are and what negative habits you have around them. And once you have identified the root of your issues and how it is realizing itself in your life, you can then target the bad habit directly. This is important because often we see a habit in ourselves and we don't realize the cause of the habit, just want to get rid of the habit itself. Attacking symptoms instead of illness is a very common issue in every aspect of wellness and it can be a little tough at first identifying the root of the issue. Yet, if we don't realize what is causing us to make these bad decisions in the first place then we can't actually fix the issue. Take the example of over eating. Perhaps you are not happy with your body and think it is because of over eating so you start starving yourself or deprive yourself of enough nutrition in the day. Now your work is suffering and you are in a bad mood because you aren't nourishing your body. Also, you have no energy because you aren't eating so you skip your workouts and your weight doesn't budge. Instead of looking at overeating as a problem, look at the holistic picture of your life.

In this example, let's say that you are not sleeping enough due to anxiety over the future. The lack of sleep is making you overeat and also lack the energy to do all the things you want to do in the day. This makes you feel even lower on yourself and you punish your body by depriving it of the food when what you really need to do is address your anxiety so you can sleep. Maybe you only get half way through this thought process and realize it is a lack of sleep so you get a prescription for a sleeping pill. This would be a band aid for the situation but ultimately does not address the anxiety you are feeling. The only way to get to the weight you want is to address the anxiety. Once you address the anxiety, your sleep patterns will start getting to normal (in this scenario, anyways) and then you will have more energy to go through your day as you want to. With more sleep you also stop eating junk and your brain is more easily able to decipher what it needs.

If you only approached the problem with I don't like the way I look, you will never actually end up achieving the goal because it wasn't an eating problem as much as it was a mental problem. Once you address the correct cause for the symptom it is amazing how quickly you can resolve issues that seemingly plagued you for years. This is not something that is always readily noticeable, so to start on this journey we will first need to assess where our strengths and weaknesses are, once you have identified your weak area(s) you can hop over to the appropriate articles and begin to dig into your own psyche, learning how to read your own mind is the beginning of owning your own future and happiness.
