Guided Meditations: Assessing What Matters

As we approach the end of the year it is a time for reflection and contemplation. New years are always considered times of transition and change and as we move towards the end of this one infamous year and into a future that feels delicately hopeful we all are quietly holding out breath and wondering what 2021 will bring. To go along with the theme of 2020, which for me the theme has been about working on our inner selves and reassessing our priorities in life, I wanted to share with you a guided meditation for the new year. This is not about self improvement or goal setting, but it is about being more fully who you are and to remember your being. In order to participate in this meditation you will just need a quiet space and your favorite writing instruments.

Go to your place to meditate and find a comfortable sitting position. Roll your shoulders back three times and forward three times, each time working with your breath. When you are ready, close your eyes and move your awareness to your body. Start at the top of your head and become aware of all the sensations in your head, feeling your hair rest on your ears or shoulders, feeling your eyelashes against your cheek. Feel the tension in your jaw and relax it, let your tongue rest away from your pallet and let your jaw slacken. Work your way down to your torso and feel the gentle lift and drop of your chest with your breath. Experience the clothing on your body against your skin, experience all the textures and warmth or coolness the clothing offers.. Work your way through to your arms and down to your fingers, wiggling your fingers and feeling the blood stir up and work back up to your arms and shoulders. Come down to your pelvis and feel your legs in your hip sockets. Feel the muscle in your legs as they hold your legs in position and become aware of the chair against your legs. Wiggle your toes and feel the coolness in your feet. Feel the texture of your socks if you are wearing some. Bring your awareness back up to your chest and give yourself three deep cleansing breaths, when you are ready we can begin the meditation.

Now imagine your life like a time lapse video. See your life growing as you want it to at this moment. Revisit your childhood and watch your accomplishments and awards, first crushes, first fights, first kiss, first dance, etc. See yourself grow into the person you are today and now take it the future. Watch your life going exactly as you want it. You hit your goal weight, you make partner, you marry the perfect person and have beautiful children. Your work is fulfilling and profitable and nothing is wrong. Watch yourself aging and accomplishing your goals and building the future that feels so distant now all happening in a matter of an instant. Everything you wish for comes to you and you experience your life how you want.

I like to picture this like the scene in the old movie The Time Machine, when the doctor is sitting on his machine watching the storefront mannequin change her clothes with the seasons and decades of fashion. See everything that you ever wanted coming to pass and see yourself growing to be a content elderly person. See yourself wrinkled and with gray hair and keep going. See yourself slowing down, getting slower and slower, sleeping more, eating less and just generally getting to the end of this life. Now see yourself at the end of your life, this is it. You are on your deathbed, surrounded with those who love you and you are looking back on your life contemplating the question: “What really mattered?”. Was it your truth or integrity in your word, being present in your life, the fame or wealth you accumulated, your work or passion. When you are at the end what will really matter to you? Allow these answers to come up and write these answers down. Know that these pages can be kept or destroyed after, do not let the fear of discovery from another party keep you from writing something genuine. Come to your deathbed and ask your older, wiser self what was it that mattered most. Write this down the first things that come to you. Now look at what you wrote, these are the things you need to focus on in 2021. Yes we have our weight loss goals and business and personal goals but these things are just one part of our life, and chances are you won't be bragging about being your goal weight on your deathbed. Thank this vision of yourself and let it fade. Keep these sentiments you wrote down either in your heart or on the paper for you to reflect on from time to time throughout the new year.
