Winter Date Ideas

The holidays are such a romantic time. The lights, the cool weather, the layers of cozy clothes all of it lends itself to building romance. There is a childlike wonder that goes with the winter that we can build off of to create sweet and memorable moments. Though 2020 has offered us some different plans this year, there is no reason not to keep romance alive this holiday season. Luckily, romance doesn't need many people, and being together in secluded areas is not just a good start but also right on par with 2020 social life. Here we have a few date ideas that are perfectly socially distanced and guaranteed to create a good time.

1- Bake Cookies Together

Do you have a favorite recipe from childhood or a family secret recipe for the best cookies? Make a date of it with an evening of baking cookies together. Of course we shouldn't fill up on just cookie dough so start the date off with a light and healthy dinner, perhaps a salad and protein to keep the bellies still ready to receive lots of cookie dough and samplings but to get some basic nutrition in there as well. You can make the cookies together or turn it into a competition, though your judges will be less than impartial. If you want to take the date to a silly level, blindfold your date and put them in charge of mixing and putting cookies on the cookie sheet while you pass ingredients. Going this route is much more about the journey than the destination so you may want to have an emergency batch of cookies ready to go in case things go less than planned. Finish off the night with a holiday movie or two!

2- Romantic Walk/Look at Lights

While I realize not everyone is living in a climate where they can go for a walk outside right now, if you are, you should take advantage of it. Dress warm and go to a quaint area nearby or even your own neighborhood and start off right at sunset. Watch the sky change and enjoy the Christmas lights as they come on. If you live in a place too cold for a walk, turn the date into a drive and drive by the best Christmas lights in town. You can take either date to the next level by packing a thermos of hot chocolate or whatever is your favorite warm holiday beverage.

3- Holiday Photoshoot

While you could get a photographer, doing this yourself will be so much more fun. Dress up in holiday pajamas or whatever costume you can think of and start decorating each other with ornaments and lights for a funny photoshoot. This doesn't have to be shared on social media so get as silly as you want to get. I feel like we live in a time now where every photo is expected to go on the internet and this causes us to censor ourselves so make the decision on if these will be shared or not before the shoot begins so you can work in your comfort levels. If you feel like venturing out of the house, go to a tree farm or in the snow or whatever location strikes your fancy. Before this date it is a good idea to invest in a cell phone tripod and a bright camera light to be sure to get the best pictures in the easiest of ways.

4- Go for a Solo Getaway

Perhaps you live somewhere that doesn't really have winter, this doesn't mean that you have to stay there! Pack up for a weekend away in a cabin in the woods or ski resort to get to experience the winter without the commitment of living there. While we know that many tourist things may be closed or at limited capacity at the moment, cuddling by the fire while the snow falls outside is an activity that actually requires social distancing.

5- Play in the Snow

For those of you who do live in an area with a proper winter, take advantage. Make snow angels, get into a snowball fight, build a snowman, embrace your inner child together! Be sure to pack a warm drink or even if you are allowed, build a small fire and roast s'mores and cuddle together.

We know that 2020 has become a year that will live in infamy but that is no reason to throw in the towel on our own lives. As we said back in March, use this time to create new memories and develop yourself and your relationships in meaningful ways. This holiday season is no different, use this space to creatively celebrate and turn 2020 into a memory that you will cherish over a dark stain in your personal history.
